Residence Massacre Purgatory Badge — Night 3 + Graves

Crimson Graves cosmetic set, the four-condition badge timer, and what changed after the cleanup patch.

Purgatory Badge Guide

The Purgatory badge activated on November 7, 2025 as the flagship reward for the Graves modifier on Night 3. It grants the Crimson Graves cosmetic set and a unique walk animation that’s recognized across all Residence Massacre servers. This guide covers the badge’s four-condition timer, the route that satisfies all of them, and how the November 23, 2025 cleanup patch shifted the rules.

The Halloween 2025 event guide is the broader hub; the Graves modifier page has the full fuel math that Purgatory depends on.

What the Purgatory badge requires

The Purgatory badge timer tracks four independent conditions at dawn. All four must be true at 06:00 in-game for the badge to fire:

  1. At least one survivor alive. Standard badge rule.
  2. At least one shambler never despawned at dawn. This means a teammate who died during the night stayed in shambler form all the way until sunrise. They cannot revive and become a survivor; they must remain a shambler.
  3. Generator never dropped below 20 fuel. Lower threshold than Bloodmoon, but still strict. The Purgatory timer tracks the lowest Generator level across the entire night.
  4. All doors stayed barricaded until their first monster break. If any door was unbarricaded when its monster arrived, the timer zeros out.

The badge rewards:

  • Crimson Graves set — full body, hat, and shoulder cosmetics in the crimson + black palette.
  • Purgatory walk animation — a slow, deliberate walk that replaces the default survivor gait. Visible to other players across all Residence Massacre servers.
  • 250 Coins (the in-game currency, formerly TIX until the August 2026 moderation rename).
  • “Purgatory Survivor” badge icon — displays on your profile card in the lobby.

The Night 3 + Graves routing for Purgatory

Purgatory is the hardest Night 3 badge because conditions 2 and 3 fight each other. Reviving a shambler costs fuel (condition 3 risk), but you also need at least one shambler to survive until dawn (condition 2 requirement). The route below balances both.

Pre-night setup (mandatory):

  1. Gas the Generator to 100 and stage two Gas Cans. Purgatory requires tight fuel math, so no improvisation here.
  2. Barricade Front Door, Kitchen window, and Piano Room window before the first monster arrives. Tea Studio’s November 23 patch confirmed these are the three doors that count for condition 4.
  3. Cameras at Bunker hatch, Lakeview Cabin 3, and Piano Room. The shambler you want to keep alive through dawn usually drops at one of these three locations.
  4. Roles: Medic (revives other shamblers early but stops reviving after 02:00 to bank fuel), Camera, Runner, and Sacrifice (the player whose job is to die early and become the dawn shambler).

Night 3 loop:

  • First half (until 02:00): The Sacrifice player should die between 23:00 and 01:00. Don’t revive them. The other three survivors focus on keeping the Generator above 50 fuel and the cameras rolling.
  • Second half (02:00 to 05:00): Medic stops reviving. The remaining two survivors + the camera operator focus on fuel conservation. Generator drops to half-power if you have 50+ fuel banked.
  • Final hour (05:00 to dawn): Hold position. Don’t push. The shambler must stay alive for one more hour — they will, because The Spider and other monsters ignore already-dead shamblers in their final hour.

This routing is consistent with the Graves modifier fuel math but adds the dawn-survival constraint. Plan for an extra 30 minutes of pre-night discussion before queuing.

What changed after the November 23, 2025 patch

The launch-window Purgatory rules had two quirks that the team patched out:

  • Pre-patch quirk 1: Doors that were barricaded after their monster arrived still counted for condition 4. Post-patch, only pre-arrival barricades count.
  • Pre-patch quirk 2: Shamblers who were revived and then re-killed still counted as “never despawned” because the system tracked the original death timestamp. Post-patch, the system tracks the current state at dawn — so re-killed shamblers don’t count.

The patch retroactively re-evaluated pre-patch clears. Players who had launched-window clears that relied on the old quirks lost the badge; players with clean runs kept theirs. See the Quality of Life 2026 update article for the full patch note.

Pairing Purgatory with other modifiers

Purgatory is a Night 3 + Graves badge by definition. You can’t run Purgatory without both. You can stack Purgatory’s underlying run with:

  • Half-Lights — works well, see the Graves modifier guide.
  • No Cabin Lights — works but requires moving the camera off Cabin 3 to maintain visibility.

Avoid:

  • Esqueletos — Esqueletos is Night 2 only, can’t be paired with Purgatory.
  • Factory Chaos — would add a fifth monster variant and break the fuel math. The Graves modifier guide has the full pairing analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Can I solo Purgatory?

Technically yes, but you’ll fail condition 1 (“at least one survivor alive”) immediately if you die. Solo players who clear Purgatory typically do so by completing the run with all four players alive and one dying at the right moment — even solo runs need a party.

Does the Crimson Graves set carry over to other characters?

Yes. The set is unlocked per-account, not per-character. Once cleared, every survivor in your account can equip Crimson Graves.

What if I revive the dawn shambler before 06:00?

The badge timer zeros out at the moment of revival. Revival is irreversible for badge purposes. Plan the no-revive window carefully.

Does the door-barricade condition (condition 4) count windows?

No. Windows don’t count for condition 4 — only doors. The November 23 patch explicitly clarified this; the launch-window confusion was patched out.

What if a shambler despawns at 05:55 instead of holding until dawn?

The badge tracks state at 06:00 sharp. If the shambler despawned before that, condition 2 fails. There’s no leeway.

Can I clear Purgatory twice?

Yes, but the second clear doesn’t grant additional rewards — only the first clear unlocks the Crimson Graves set. Repeat clears are useful for practicing the route or showing off the walk animation.

Where do I report a Purgatory bug?

Use the in-game report button or the official links page. Purgatory-related reports are flagged for the team’s badge-rules specialist.
