Graves Modifier Guide

The Graves modifier debuted in the Halloween 2025 event on October 24, 2025 and became a permanent Night 3 option in the November 23, 2025 cleanup patch. It rewrites the survival loop: every survivor who dies becomes a slow shambler instead of a permanent corpse, and other players can revive them by spending Generator fuel. Most teams treat it as the hardest Night 3 modifier because the cost of keeping teammates alive competes with the cost of keeping the lights on. This guide covers the fuel math, the revivable-shambler rules, and how to route the Purgatory badge that depends on Graves.

If you’re still ramping up on Night 3 in general, the Night 3 base walkthrough covers the pre-Graves layout. The Night 3 modifiers hub lists the other permanent options that share the rotation, including Esqueletos, Bloodmoon, and the post-Halloween roster.

How shambler revives actually work

When a teammate dies under Graves, three things happen within two seconds:

  1. Their character model drops to a crawl at the location of death.
  2. A white wispy aura appears over the body. This is your revive prompt. Other survivors can walk into the aura and hold E to begin reviving.
  3. The Generator emits a soft audio cue every 10 seconds as long as the shambler is still alive on the floor. That audio is the timer — it stops only when a survivor revives the shambler or the shambler despawns at dawn.

Revive time scales with how many times the shambler has been downed during the same night:

  • First down → 8 seconds to revive.
  • Second down → 14 seconds.
  • Third down → 22 seconds, and the revive audio cue turns red instead of white.
  • Fourth down → permanent death; the shambler despawns at dawn and counts as a real casualty for badge progress.

If you’re reviving, you have to stay inside the aura for the full duration — walking out cancels the revive and resets the timer to whatever tier the shambler is in. That means a player who’s reviving is a sitting duck for whatever monster is on the floor. Pair revives with a camera sweep or a teammate watching the door.

The fuel math that makes Graves brutal

Each successful revive costs 15 Generator fuel — drained the moment the revive completes, not when you start it. A failed revive (cancelled because the reviver got hit) doesn’t cost fuel, but the shambler still counts the failed revive as another down. So a typical worst-case Night 3 under Graves burns:

  • 3 down-revive cycles × 15 fuel = 45 fuel
  • Base Night 3 fuel burn = ~40 fuel for cameras, lights, and the door intercom.
  • Total worst-case = ~85 fuel before dawn.

The Generator holds 100 fuel when fully gassed at dusk, and you can stage up to two Gas Cans in the Generator room. That means you cannot afford three full revive cycles if you also want to keep the cameras running. The route below is built around that hard ceiling.

Pre-night setup (mandatory):

  1. Gas the Generator to 100 with both cans staged.
  2. Position cameras at Bunker hatch, Lakeview Cabin 3, and Piano Room. These three cover the most common shambler drop locations.
  3. Move the Shotgun to a midpoint between Fuse Box and Piano Room. Shotgun shells under Graves are scarce because every shambler kill pulls from the same pool.
  4. One player commits to Medic role: their only job is reviving shamblers. Two players commit to Camera role. The fourth player commits to Runner role and never stays in one room longer than 15 seconds.

Night 3 loop:

  • First half (until 02:00 in-game): Keep cameras up, keep the lights on, no revives unless the down is in a safe room. Spend the early hours banking fuel.
  • Second half (02:00 to 05:00): Switch the Generator down to half-power if you have 50+ fuel banked. Half-power keeps the cameras but turns off the lights, which forces The Spider into slower behavior. Use the saved fuel to bank two revive cycles for the final hour.
  • Final hour (05:00 to dawn): If you have a shambler down and less than 30 fuel left, burn them. The Purgatory badge is cleared by reaching dawn with at least one survivor alive and at least one shambler never despawned — not by keeping everyone alive.

This routing is consistent with the broader Halloween 2025 event guide and the Purgatory badge’s definition. Tea Studio confirmed the badge rules in the November 23, 2025 patch notes.

Routes that pair well with Graves

Graves is a defensive modifier. Don’t stack it with another defensive modifier. Here are the verified pairs that work and the ones that brick the run.

Works well with Graves:

  • Esqueletos (Night 2 modifier) — but only if you queued Esqueletos on Night 2 and Graves on Night 3 separately. Esqueletos adds audio reverb that masks revive audio cues, so it actually balances out if your team is audio-focused.
  • Half-Lights (Night 3 sub-modifier) — the permanent Night 3 lights toggle that the Quality of Life 2026 patch added. Pairing it with Graves turns off the white aura animation, which forces audio-only revives. Hard mode.

Avoid pairing with Graves:

  • Bloodmoon — the Bloodmoon badge requires keeping all four survivors alive for the badge timer, which conflicts with the Graves “burn the shambler” calculus. You’ll either miss the Bloodmoon timer or burn through your fuel reviving teammates.
  • Factory Chaos — adds a fifth monster variant and accelerates fuel burn by another 20%. Combining with Graves triples your fuel budget needs.

What changed after the November 23, 2025 patch

Before the cleanup, Graves had two quirks that the team patched out:

  • Quirk 1 (pre-patch): Revive auras used to spawn on top of The Spider’s pathing lane, which meant reviving a shambler in Piano Room usually summoned The Spider within 10 seconds. Post-patch, the aura spawns 1.5 meters offset from any monster pathing lane.
  • Quirk 2 (pre-patch): Shambler despawn at dawn used to count as a death for the True Survivor badge. Post-patch, dawn despawns don’t count against True Survivor. (Graves-exclusive behaviour; normal deaths still count.)

If you cleared Graves during the Halloween 2025 launch window, those pre-patch clears still count for the Purgatory badge, but the True Survivor badge was retroactively awarded based on the post-patch rules. See the Quality of Life 2026 update article for the full patch note.

Frequently asked questions

Can I revive a shambler who was downed by The Spider’s instant-kill attack?

No. Spider instant-kills are permanent even under Graves. Only normal monster damage creates a shambler.

Does reviving a shambler count toward the Purgatory badge?

No. The Purgatory badge requires at least one shambler never despawned at dawn, which means the shambler has to stay alive until sunrise. You can revive a shambler only to have them downed again later — that’s fine, but it costs an extra 15 fuel.

What if all four players die under Graves?

The run ends. The Generator doesn’t auto-fuel itself, so no shamblers will be revived and the badge counters all zero out.

Does the Medic role need any specific gear?

The Shotgun is the best Medic weapon because it can interrupt a monster attack mid-revive. A Medic carrying the standard Pistol can still revive but takes longer to recover from interrupts.

Is Graves on the Daily Quests rotation?

Yes. Graves joined the Daily Quests Night 3 rotation on December 1, 2025 alongside Esqueletos and Bloodmoon. The rotation cycles every 14 days.

Where do I report a Graves-specific bug?

Use the in-game report button or the official links page. Graves-related reports are prioritized because of the fuel math implications.
