Residence Massacre Closet Hiding & QTE

How Night 1 Rework hiding works — spit traps, closet minigames, and when lights still save you.

Closet QTE Guide

The August 21, 2026 Night 1 Rework turned closets from a cheap pause button into a skill check. If you still hide by stuffing three teammates into one wardrobe and waiting, The Mutant (community name Larry) will see you, start a QTE, and either retreat or pull you out. This page is the dedicated hiding manual that sits between the Night 1 walkthrough and the Night 1 Rework patch notes.

Residence Massacre remains online co-op on Place 14437001043. Practice these rules in a vanilla Night 1 lobby before stacking modifiers.

When you should hide

Hide when all of the following are true:

  1. Larry is inside the house (lights no longer scare him — they only flicker).
  2. He has line of sight or you just stepped on / near his spit trap.
  3. You have a closet or approved locker within a short sprint — stamina items from the Items tier list matter here.
  4. A teammate is not already in that closet if the interaction bugs on overcrowding.

Do not hide during window-phase attacks. At windows you still turn the room lights on to scare him away, then repair barricades with the Barricades & Generator loop.

The spit trap

After chasing for a stretch, The Mutant spits a trap that stuns and chips health. Community consensus after the rework:

  • Treat the spit as a forced closet timer, not a “keep kiting” event.
  • If you ignore it, chase becomes endless until you die or somehow break LOS into a closet.
  • Call “trap down” in voice so the camera player on Camera Setup stops asking for window lights.

Bear Trap and Flare Gun from the Coins Shop can buy seconds, but they do not replace hiding once Larry is indoors. Rank those tools on Items.

Closet QTE rules

If Larry sees you in the closet, he tries to drag you out:

  • Win the QTE → he retreats and leaves the house. This is the cleanest indoor reset on Night 1.
  • Fail the QTE → jumpscare, damage, and you are back in the roam/chase loop.
  • He never saw you → you can wait for footsteps to fade and exit without a minigame. That is still the preferred play when you entered before he looked at the door.

QTE prompts follow your platform — see Controls for mash vs hold differences on PC, mobile, and console. Do not start a QTE with zero stamina; Iron Lungs or Bloxy Cola make the exit sprint safer.

Closet placement on the house

Night 1 Rework closets sit on ground-floor halls and upstairs bedrooms. Practical callouts:

CalloutUse
Stairs closetMid-house reset after a kitchen window breach
Upstairs bedroomEscape when Larry pathing hugs the stairwell
Do not use as zombie jail during GravesOn Graves, one zombie can be locked in a closet because it cannot break closets — that is a modifiers trick, not a Mutant trick

Keep interior closet doors repaired only if you have spare planks. The Night 1 barricade table still prioritizes exterior first.

Co-op hiding discipline

  • One body per closet when QTE is likely. Stacking looks funny and loses interactions.
  • Camera caller stays out unless they are the chased player. A dead feed is worse than a missed QTE.
  • Fuel runner should not hide in the downstairs closet that blocks the route to the generator. Pick upstairs if Larry is on the porch.
  • After a won QTE, immediately close the front door and check windows — Larry leaving the house returns you to the scare-with-lights phase.

Solo players: pre-open the nearest closet door during daylight so the interact is one click, not a hunt. Pair with the night prep checklist.

Lights vs closets (do not mix the two phases)

PhaseCorrect tool
Larry at a windowRoom lights ON, hammer ready
Larry inside roamingDo not rely on lights; break LOS
Chase + spit trapCloset, then QTE if seen
Generator run after 4 AMFront door shut first — open door skips windows and can force a QTE instantly (Night 1 Rework)

Modifier collisions

  • Thunderstorm fuse strikes still demand wrench work — hiding through a blackout without a plan fails. See Modifiers.
  • Blizzard freeze meter still needs the fireplace; a closet does not warm you.
  • Party random window breaks can invalidate Shatterproof badge runs even if you QTE perfectly.
  • House Chaos stacks all of the above — practice vanilla QTE first.

After you master hiding

  1. Re-clear vanilla Night 1 twice with intentional QTE wins.
  2. Add Bloodmoon (longer night, faster Larry) from the modifiers page.
  3. Unlock shop stuns if you keep losing the minigame under pressure.
  4. Watch Updates for QTE prompt hotfixes.

Closets in 2026 are a reset button you have to earn. Learn the minigame, call traps, and Night 1 stops feeling like a coin flip.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Residence Massacre survivors.

What is the closet QTE in Residence Massacre?

If The Mutant sees you hiding in a closet during Night 1, you play a quick-time minigame. Winning makes him leave the house; failing pulls you out.

Do lights still scare The Mutant after the rework?

Yes at windows. Once he is inside, lights only flicker. Use closets and line-of-sight breaks indoors.

What does The Mutant spit trap do?

After a chase he can spit a stun trap. If you do not hide, the chase continues until you go down. Treat it as a closet timer.

Can multiple players hide in one closet?

Avoid it. Overcrowding can fail the interact. One chased player per closet is the safe rule in co-op.

Does winning a QTE end Night 1?

No. It only forces The Mutant to leave the house so you can repair and scare him at windows again until the timer ends.
