Residence Massacre Trail Camera — Exterior Watch
How the Trail Camera watches the forest outside Lakeview Camp and the bunker hatch, and why it pairs with the Camera Tablet for full coverage.
The Trail Camera is the exterior counterpart to the Camera Tablet. It is a small mounted camera on a stake that the player places in the dirt around Lakeview Camp or the forest approach to The Bunker hatch. It only spawns in Night 3 and The Bunker memory; it never appears in Night 1, Night 2, or Endless. This page covers trail camera placement rules, the four-cabin trail map, the event-trigger mechanic that records anomalies crossing the stake, and how the recorded events tie into Lakeview Camp lore. Place 14437001043, online co-op, PvP removed January 9, 2026, no Codes unlock Trail Cameras.
What the Trail Camera is
A small cylindrical camera mounted on a green metal stake. The Player places it by interacting with the stake while holding a Trail Camera item. It records events — anomalies, NPCs, or certain Player actions — that cross within 8 studs of the stake. The recorded clips appear on the trail camera player interface, which is a separate UI from the Camera Tablet.
Key stats from the August 2026 build:
- Placement range: 8 studs of useful detail per camera.
- Battery: 30 minutes per stake before it auto-collects.
- Event types: anomaly crossings, NPC patrols, Player interactions with key doors.
- Storage: 8 clips per camera before the oldest is overwritten.
- Direction: fixed at placement; cannot rotate after stake-down.
The Trail Camera was added to Night 3 in the October 2024 Halloween 2024 update. The original version had 4 cameras; the August 21, 2026 Night 1 Rework patch raised the cap to 6.
Where to find Trail Cameras
Trail Cameras spawn in two places in current patches:
- Lakeview Camp ranger station wall — three Trail Cameras mount on the back wall, behind the Shotgun pickup. Standard Night 3 supply.
- Bunker maintenance supply crate — two Trail Cameras drop from the brown crate in the maintenance fork. Bunker memory only.
Trail Cameras do not spawn in:
- The residence (Night 1, Night 2).
- Endless mode.
- The lobby.
- The lobby storage crate that holds the Shotgun after Bunker completion. The Shotgun crate and Trail Camera crate are separate.
Players who watched the 2024 Halloween trailer may recall a fourth Trail Camera location — the Spirit Helper shack — but that location was removed in the April 19, 2026 April Fools 2026 cleanup when the Spirit Helper gain was rebalanced.
The four-cabin trail map
The standard Lakeview Camp Trail Camera setup is called the four-cabin trail because it covers the four forest cabins. Each cabin has a recommended stake location:
| Cabin | Recommended stake spot | What it catches |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin 1 (NW) | North tree line, 5 studs from porch | The Spider drops from roof |
| Cabin 2 (NE) | East clearing, between trees | The Husk pathing from the dirt road |
| Cabin 3 (SW) | South creek crossing | The Abomination water approach |
| Cabin 4 (SE) | South trail bend | Radio operator NPCs from Soldiers scene |
The four-cabin trail takes about 2 minutes to set up in solo Night 3 and 3.5 minutes in co-op (more teammates means more cameras placed faster, but you have to walk further to reach the SE cabin). Pub lobbies that skip Cabin 4’s stake miss the Soldiers lore beat.
Trail Camera event mechanic
When an anomaly or NPC crosses within 8 studs of a placed stake, the camera records a 6-second clip. The clip is automatically flagged with the entity type:
- Spider clip: red frame, plays a single chitter audio.
- Husk clip: orange frame, plays a cough audio.
- Abomination clip: black frame, plays a low-frequency hum.
- Soldier clip: green frame, plays a radio squelch.
- Player interaction clip: blue frame, plays the door interact sound.
Flagged clips stack on the camera player UI. Pressing the E key while hovering a clip opens a 4-second slow-motion replay of the event. The slow-mo replay is the only way to confirm what anomaly crossed — Stake-only players without the replay cannot tell Spider from Husk at distance.
After 8 clips, the oldest is overwritten. Camera players should offload important clips to the global clipboard at the ranger station desk. The clipboard holds 16 across all cameras; clips there are saved for the rest of the Night.
Trail Camera vs Camera Tablet
These are two different tools with non-overlapping roles:
| Feature | Trail Camera | Camera Tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage area | Exterior (forest, dirt road, hatch) | Interior (bunker rooms) |
| Placement | Player-placed stakes | Pre-placed fixed slots |
| Storage | 8 clips per camera, 16 clipboard | Live view, no storage |
| Power | 30-minute battery | Infinite (wired) |
| Use case | Catch anomalies entering from outside | Catch anomalies already inside |
| Spawn location | Ranger station wall (Night 3) | Broadcast room desk (Bunker) |
In a Night 3 run, you want Trail Cameras (exterior catches). In a Bunker run, you want the Camera Tablet (interior catches). Pub lobbies that bring the wrong tool to the wrong map waste setup time.
The two tools can technically both spawn in the Night 3 Lakeview Ghost event during Halloween 2025, but that event is no longer active — the only working combo is Trail Camera for Night 3 and Camera Tablet for Bunker.
Trail Camera controls and input mapping
Trail Camera controls are different from wall monitors or the Camera Tablet:
- Left-click: place stake on the ground.
- Right-click: cycle camera through recorded clips (if any).
- Scroll wheel: open the full clip list overlay.
- E: slow-motion replay on the hovered clip.
- R: save current clip to clipboard at ranger station desk.
- Tab: exit camera view, return to flashlight.
Mobile users get a pinch-to-zoom stake placement mode instead of left-click. The mobile overlay shows the 8-slot clip ring on the bottom of the screen.
How the Trail Camera connects to the rest of the wiki
- Camera Tablet — the interior counterpart.
- Lakeview Camp — the map where Trail Cameras spawn.
- Night 3 — the only mainline night with Trail Cameras.
- The Bunker — the memory where Trail Cameras drop from the maintenance crate.
- The Spider — the anomaly the four-cabin trail is designed to catch.
- The Abomination — the anomaly Cabin 3 stakes catch on water approach.
- Soldiers — the NPCs Cabin 4 stakes catch.
- Halloween 2025 — the event that added the Trail Camera UI.
- Night 1 Rework — the August 2026 patch that raised camera cap from 4 to 6.
Co-op etiquette and Trail Camera priority
In a four-player Night 3 run, two players should manage Trail Cameras:
- Caller — places Cabin 1 and Cabin 2 stakes. Monitors clips from ranger station clipboard.
- Rear guard — places Cabin 3 and Cabin 4 stakes. Monitors water approach for Abomination.
- Hammer — does not place stakes. Focuses on doors.
- Power — does not place stakes. Focuses on generator and fuel.
The Caller and Rear Guard carry the Trail Camera item. The other two teammates should not pick up Trail Cameras — there are only 3 in Night 3 (after the August 2026 cap), so two is the right number.
If you are the Caller, your job is to stay near the ranger station. The clipboard is at the desk, and clipboard access is the fastest way to review what anomalies crossed which cabin.
What the Trail Camera is not
- Not in Night 1 / Night 2. Those nights use wall monitors, not stake cameras. Lakeview Camp is the only exterior map in the main campaign.
- Not in Endless. Endless mode has no exterior coverage tool. Endless vendors do not sell Trail Camera items.
- Not infinite storage. 8 clips per camera is the hard cap. Offload important clips to the clipboard or lose them.
- Not rotatable. Once the stake is placed, the camera direction is fixed. Plan your angle before placing.
- Not in the Coins Shop. Trail Cameras are map-spawn only. The 2024 Halloween event had a Trail Camera gamepass prop that was retired in April 2026.
- Not affected by PvP. PvP was removed January 9, 2026. Trail Cameras were never in PvP.
Patch history
| Date | Patch | Change |
|---|---|---|
| October 2024 | Halloween 2024 | Trail Cameras first added to Night 3 |
| January 2025 | QoL 2025 | Clipboard added at ranger station |
| April 19, 2026 | April Fools 2026 | Spirit Helper shack stake removed; Trail Camera gamepass retired |
| January 9, 2026 | PvP removal | Trail Camera stake visual rebalanced to forest camo |
| August 21, 2026 | Night 1 Rework | Trail Camera cap raised from 4 to 6 per Night |
The current meta (post-August 2026) is 2 Trail Cameras + 4 stakes placed = 6 total catches per Night 3 clear. Co-op squads that miss the cap lose anomaly detection on the water approach.
Voice, sound, and small details
- The Trail Camera has a distinct click when placed on the ground. The click audio is shared with the wall camera prop in the residence.
- The stake is invisible to anomalies. Neither Spider nor Husk aggro on a placed stake.
- Picking up a Trail Camera from the ranger station wall plays a single beep from the Shotgun audio file. Tea Studio reused the audio from the Shotgun prop.
- The clipboard at the ranger station desk has a green border that lights up when a new clip is saved. A blue border means the clipboard is empty.
- The 6-second clip loop plays the same audio recorded by the anomaly — Spider clips have chitter audio, Husk clips have cough audio, etc. The audio is captured live, not pre-recorded.
Common Trail Camera mistakes
- Placing Cabin 1 stake too close to the porch. Anomalies pass within 4 studs of the porch, which clips the stake recording. Keep the stake at 5+ studs.
- Forgetting Cabin 4 stake. The Soldier lore beat plays on Cabin 4. Skip Cabin 4 and you miss the green-frame clip that foreshadows the ending.
- Letting clips overflow. 8 clips is the cap. Offload to the clipboard regularly.
- Picking up Trail Camera as hammer or power player. Only Caller and Rear Guard should carry Trail Cameras in the standard role split.
- Standing too close to a placed stake. Player proximity counts as a “Player interaction clip” — if you stand near a stake too long, you overwrite anomaly clips.
- Buying the retired gamepass. The Trail Camera gamepass prop was refunded in April 2026.
The Trail Camera is Residence Massacre’s exterior anomaly detector — a stake-mounted camera that records anomalies crossing forest paths, paired with the Camera Tablet for full interior coverage. Place the four-cabin trail, offload clips at the ranger station clipboard, and the forest will tell you what crossed before the door does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Residence Massacre survivors.
Where do you find Trail Cameras in Residence Massacre?
Trail Cameras spawn on the ranger station wall during Night 3 (three cameras) and from the maintenance supply crate in The Bunker memory (two cameras). They do not spawn anywhere else.
How many Trail Cameras can you place per Night?
Six stakes total in Night 3 after the August 2026 Night 1 Rework patch. The four-cabin trail setup uses four stakes and is the standard configuration.
What does each Trail Camera clip frame color mean?
Red frame is a Spider crossing, orange is Husk, black is Abomination, green is a Soldier NPC, and blue is a Player interaction. Frame color tells you what entity triggered the clip without watching the replay.
Can Trail Cameras be used in Night 1 or Night 2?
No. Trail Cameras only spawn in Night 3 (Lakeview Camp) and The Bunker memory. Night 1 and Night 2 use wall-mounted monitors.
How do you save a Trail Camera clip permanently?
Press R while a clip is selected to save it to the ranger station clipboard. The clipboard holds 16 clips across all cameras and saves them for the rest of the Night.
Do Trail Cameras work in Endless?
No. Endless mode has no exterior coverage tool. Trail Cameras are map-spawn only and only in Night 3 and The Bunker.
What happens if you place a Trail Camera stake near an anomaly path?
The camera records a 6-second clip of the anomaly crossing within 8 studs. The clip is flagged with the entity type and added to the 8-clip ring. Older clips are overwritten if you do not offload them.
